Vet Receptionist Jobs at Veterinary Practices

Vet receptionist jobs are the front-desk roles at animal hospitals and veterinary practices: booking appointments, checking patients in and out, taking payment, keeping records straight, and answering a phone that often arrives with a symptom attached.

VeterinaryHires lists veterinary practice jobs only, so the openings above are at general-practice clinics, emergency and specialty hospitals, and veterinary groups.

The listings are a mix of jobs posted directly by practices and jobs gathered from employers' public career pages, and they change daily.

Apply takes you to the employer's own application, and the filters at the top of the page narrow the veterinary receptionist vacancies by salary, benefits and location.

Overview

What Does a Veterinary Receptionist Do?

A veterinary receptionist — often posted as a client service representative or CSR — is the practice's first point of contact, handling scheduling, check-in and discharge, payment, records, and triage phone calls.

The role carries more clinical judgment than a typical front desk, because the person answering the phone is often the one deciding what counts as an emergency.

Job titles

Job Titles You'll See

Practices don't agree on what to call this job, so search more than one title.

Client service representative, or CSR, now appears in veterinary postings more often than "receptionist" for what is functionally the same role.

You'll also see care coordinator and pet host.

Read the duties list rather than the title: the same name can mean a phone-focused role at one practice and a full check-in, checkout and payment role at another.

Lead titles sit one rung up: lead CSR, client services lead, pet host lead, or receptionist supervisor. That job is the same desk plus coverage, training and the second call on a difficult client, and what changes when a CSR becomes a lead is covered in the career guide. The usual step beyond that is veterinary practice manager, which needs no clinical credential.

Requirements

Skills and Experience Practices Ask For

No state license, exam or required program exists for this role.

Practices hire on communication ability and teach the veterinary content on the job, which makes the front desk one of the few ways into a practice with no animal-health background.

The skills postings screen for are practical ones.

You need a calm phone manner when a caller is frightened, comfort with cost conversations, accurate message-taking, and a genuine tolerance for being interrupted all day.

Customer-facing work in retail, hospitality or a medical office transfers well, and prior veterinary experience mainly helps because you'll already understand the words coming down the phone.

Part of the job is emotional support. Depending on the practice, you may check in owners for euthanasia appointments, talk through estimates with owners worried about the cost, and calm a client who has run out of patience. The guide to handling client escalations at the front desk covers that part in depth.

One question worth asking in any interview: does the practice have a written, veterinarian-authored protocol for symptom calls? You shouldn't be deciding what counts as an emergency on instinct, and veterinary phone triage explains why that decision belongs to the veterinarians.

Schedules

Hours, Shifts and Job Types

Listings show the job type (full-time, part-time or contract) wherever the employer states it.

The front desk is staffed whenever the practice is open, so the hours follow the practice.

A clinic with evening or Saturday hours needs front-desk cover then.

An emergency hospital open overnight may need front-desk cover overnight too.

If weekends, evenings or a rotating schedule matter to you, check the posting's hours or ask before you apply.

A well-written posting also says whether you'd ever cover the desk alone.

Software

Records and Practice Software

Veterinary practices run scheduling, medical records, invoicing and inventory on a practice information management system (PIMS).

As a receptionist you'll book in it, check patients in and out of it, take payment through it, and pull or send records from it.

Which system depends on the practice, and some postings name theirs. If a listing asks for a system you haven't used, don't rule yourself out, because the software is learned on the job. For an overview of the main systems and who owns them, see the veterinary PIMS comparison.

Employers

Who Hires Veterinary Receptionists

Two broad kinds of employer post these jobs.

Independent practices are often a single clinic hiring for its own front desk.

Multi-location veterinary groups, including corporate-owned hospital networks, employ front-desk staff across many hospitals under one employer.

Emergency and specialty hospitals hire front-desk staff too, and their hours can run well beyond a general-practice clinic's.

Whichever kind of employer you're considering, Apply takes you to its own application.

Every employer with openings on the board has its own page listing all of its current jobs. Browse them in the veterinary employer directory.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01What skills are needed to be a veterinary receptionist?

The core skills are communication ones: a calm phone manner, patience with worried or upset clients, comfort discussing costs and estimates, and accurate message-taking while being interrupted.

Basic computer skills matter because scheduling, records and payment all run through practice software.

Veterinary vocabulary helps but is learned on the job.

02Do you need experience to become a vet receptionist?

Not usually.

There is no license, exam or required program, and practices teach the veterinary side on the job.

When a posting mentions experience, check whether it says required or preferred.

Customer service, retail, hospitality and medical-office work all transfer, and prior veterinary experience mostly shortens the learning curve.

03What software do veterinary receptionists use?

They use the practice's practice information management system (PIMS), the software that runs scheduling, medical records, invoicing and inventory. Which system depends on the practice, and some postings name it. It is learned on the job; the PIMS comparison covers the main systems.

04Are vet receptionist jobs full-time or part-time, and do they require weekends?

Both exist, and listings show the job type (full-time, part-time or contract) wherever the employer states it.

Weekend and evening shifts depend on the practice's hours: the front desk is staffed whenever the practice is open, so a clinic with Saturday hours or an emergency hospital open overnight may schedule receptionists then.

Check the posting or ask before applying.

05What other job titles are used for veterinary receptionists?

The most common is client service representative (CSR), which now appears in veterinary postings more often than receptionist.

Care coordinator and pet host are also used.

Senior versions include lead CSR, client services lead, pet host lead and receptionist supervisor.

Search more than one title and read the duties.

06How do I find veterinary receptionist jobs near me?

Use the location filter at the top of this page to narrow openings to your city or state.

Cities and states with enough current openings also get their own vet receptionist jobs page, listed in this page's location section when available.

Listings change daily, so check back if your area has nothing open today.
