Vet Technician Jobs at Veterinary Practices

A vet technician job is the credentialed clinical role in an animal hospital: inducing and monitoring anesthesia, taking radiographs, running lab samples, assisting in surgery, performing dental cleanings and nursing patients through recovery, all under a veterinarian's supervision.

VeterinaryHires lists veterinary practice jobs only, so the veterinary technician jobs above are at general-practice clinics, emergency and specialty hospitals, and veterinary groups.

The listings are a mix of jobs posted directly by practices and jobs gathered from employers' public career pages, and they change daily.

Browsing is free with no account, and Apply takes you to the employer's own application.

Overview

What Does a Veterinary Technician Do?

A veterinary technician is a credentialed animal-health professional who performs anesthesia, dental prophylaxis, diagnostics, and nursing care under veterinarian supervision.

The credential and its title vary by state — RVT, LVT, CVT, or LVMT — and the scope of what a technician may perform is set by each state's practice act.

Requirements

Vet Tech Job Requirements

The standard route into a vet tech job is an associate degree in veterinary technology from a program accredited by the AVMA's Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA).

CVTEA is the only accreditor of US veterinary technology programs, and it does not accredit veterinary assistant programs.

Every accredited program requires at least 60 semester credit hours and 240 hours of hands-on clinical experience, including online programs. The associate degree takes about two years; see how long vet tech school takes and how to become a vet tech. Studying online? Check which online vet tech programs are accredited.

Employers add their own requirements on top, such as years of experience, specific clinical skills or weekend availability.

The skills postings ask for mirror the job's duties: anesthesia and patient monitoring, catheter placement and blood draws, radiography, dental cleanings, and clear communication with pet owners and the medical team.

Read each listing's requirements before you apply.

Credentialing

The VTNE and State Credentials

The national exam is the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), a 3-hour, 170-question exam run by the AAVSB, and graduating from an accredited program is the standard route to sitting it. The AAVSB does not credential anyone. The state does, and the title differs by state: RVT, LVT, CVT and LVMT are four state names for one credential. See the VTNE explained for the exam itself.

What the credential means for a job depends on the state. Some states require it to work as a technician, some protect only the title, and some issue no state credential at all. Check your state in vet tech requirements by state, and see can you work as a vet tech without a credential.

This is general information, not legal or veterinary advice.

Confirm current requirements with your state veterinary board.

Specialties

Vet Tech Specializations

Some postings focus the role on one area of veterinary medicine, such as surgery, anesthesia, dentistry or emergency and critical care.

A surgical technician, for example, is a vet tech working in the surgery suite rather than a separate job.

The formal step beyond that is the Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) designation.

NAVTA recognizes 16 specialty academies, 11 fully and 5 provisionally, covering areas including emergency and critical care, anesthesia and analgesia, dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, clinical practice, behavior, nutrition, clinical pathology, diagnostic imaging and ophthalmology.

Each academy sets its own bar, typically years of logged specialty hours, a case log, written case reports and an exam. Compare them in VTS specialties compared.

Work settings

Where Vet Techs Work

General practice is the most familiar setting: wellness visits, vaccines, dental cleanings and routine surgery on an appointment schedule, with animals and pet owners you see for years.

Emergency hospitals take unscheduled, unstable cases in triage order. A 24-hour hospital needs technicians on every shift, so overnight, weekend and holiday rotations are part of the job, and ER postings often advertise shift differentials.

Specialty and referral hospitals organize work by service, such as surgery, internal medicine, oncology or imaging, and a technician may work in one service.

Listings show full-time, part-time or contract where the employer states it; contract and relief roles cover shifts rather than a permanent position. Compare the settings in GP vs ER vs specialty tech.

Compare roles

Vet Tech vs Vet Assistant

A veterinary assistant generally needs no program, exam or state credential.

A credentialed vet tech has typically completed an accredited program and passed the VTNE, though a few states also allow experience-based routes, and holds a state credential where the state issues one.

The national median is $47,380 for technicians against $38,150 for veterinary assistants and laboratory animal caretakers, a combined BLS occupation (SOC 31-9096).

Neither may diagnose, give a prognosis, prescribe or perform surgery: state practice acts reserve those to the veterinarian. Which other tasks a technician may perform depends on the state; see vet tech scope of practice by state and vet tech vs vet assistant.

Veterinary technologist jobs are the same role: technologist refers to a four-year bachelor's degree, not a different scope, and both sit the same VTNE (technician vs technologist). Browse veterinary assistant jobs or veterinarian jobs for the roles on either side.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01What qualifications do you need to be a vet tech?

The standard route is an associate degree from a CVTEA-accredited veterinary technology program, a passing score on the VTNE, and a credential from your state where the state issues one. States differ on whether the credential is required to work, protects only the title, or doesn't exist, so check your state's requirements. Employers add their own requirements, such as experience or specific clinical skills.

02How long is veterinary technician school?

The standard associate degree takes about two years.

Every CVTEA-accredited program must include at least 60 semester credit hours and 240 hours of hands-on clinical experience, and that applies to online and distance programs too.

A bachelor's-level veterinary technologist program takes four years, and graduates of both sit the same VTNE.

03What can vet techs specialize in?

NAVTA recognizes 16 Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) academies, including emergency and critical care, anesthesia and analgesia, dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, clinical practice, behavior, nutrition, diagnostic imaging and ophthalmology. Each academy sets its own experience hours, case log and exam. See how to become a VTS.

04Where do vet techs work?

Mostly in veterinary practices: 89.9% of veterinary technologists and technicians work in the veterinary services industry, according to the BLS OEWS May 2025 release.

Within practice, the main settings are general practice, emergency and 24-hour hospitals, and specialty and referral hospitals.

Every listing on VeterinaryHires is at a veterinary practice.

05Do vet tech jobs require nights, weekends or holidays?

It depends on the hospital.

Emergency and 24-hour hospitals need technicians on every shift, so their schedules include overnight, weekend and holiday rotations.

General-practice schedules follow the practice's opening hours, which vary by employer.

Listings show full-time, part-time or contract where the employer states it, and it's worth asking how shifts rotate before you accept.

06How much do vet techs make an hour?

The national median is $22.78 an hour, or $47,380 a year, for veterinary technologists and technicians (SOC 29-2056) in the BLS OEWS May 2025 release.

The lowest-paid 10% earn $17.17 an hour or less and the top 10% earn $30.38 or more.

Individual listings show the employer's own rate where it's disclosed.
