VTS-Nutrition: Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians

NAVTA describes AVNT as supporting veterinary nutrition by demonstrating the expertise of veterinary technicians in the field and endorsing them as a vital part of the veterinary nutrition profession.

AVNT's own application page calls the route self-driven: a process by which technicians become certified as specialists in animal nutrition.

The academy's homepage frames the stakes — nutrition is the one part of an animal's life, alongside genetics and environment, that the nutrition team can directly manage.

There are no sub-specialty tracks: one application, one census, one exam.

AVNT sets two floors that both have to be met: you must be a credentialed veterinary technician for at least 3 years, and you must have accumulated at least 4000 work-experience hours focused on nutrition.

The two floors move independently.

A technician who has spent years in a general role may clear the 3-year bar while still short on hours, because only nutrition-focused time accumulates toward the 4000 — and the hours are not open-ended.

AVNT's application page reads them against a look-back window, so nutrition hours from years back may no longer count: check the current window with AVNT before you plan around old hours.

Track how much of your week is genuinely nutrition work — assessments, diet calculations, client follow-up — rather than total time on the floor.

The package is built from your own nutrition caseload.

You collect 40-60 cases for the application's case census, then choose five case studies from that census to showcase your nutrition knowledge.

The skills requirement runs on two lists, foundation and advanced: 90% of the skills on each list must be attested as mastered, 70% of your mastered skills on each list must appear in the census, and AVNT's application page defines mastery as completing a skill numerous times over time until you could describe it accurately enough to train someone else.

Add 40 or more hours of RACE-certified or equivalent continuing education from the previous 3 years, two letters of reference due September 1, three examination questions you write yourself, and the two-part structure — Part 1 due March 15, Part 2 due September 30 — and the package is a year's work, not a form.

Applicants whose application package is deemed acceptable then take a certifying examination in June of the following year, so the exam lands a full cycle after the paperwork begins.
