American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM): How to Become Board-Certified

ACVPM certifies veterinarians in veterinary preventive medicine; the college's own description of becoming a Diplomate speaks of joining veterinary professionals in preventive medicine and public health at national and international levels.

AVMA lists a single specialty under the college — Epidemiology — and counts 1,359 active ACVPM diplomates as of December 31, 2025.

AVMA's table also lists 100 active diplomates under the Epidemiology line, a figure that does not account for the college total, so read both numbers exactly as AVMA prints them rather than as a complete breakdown of the field.

The credential itself carries the title Diplomate of the ACVPM.

Eligibility starts with the degree: applicants must be graduates of a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA, hold a certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG), or be legally licensed to practice veterinary medicine.

The first experience pathway is to have successfully completed, or be in the final year of, a formal training or residency program approved by the College.

Approval is the qualifying condition — the exam requirements on file set no program length for this pathway — so the timeline here is the program's own, not a number the college states.

The second pathway fits veterinarians whose qualifying experience came through work rather than a College-approved program.

It requires having obtained the veterinary degree at least four calendar years before the exam application deadline and, during that four-year period, participating in and documenting adequate qualifying work or volunteer experience in three or more areas of veterinary preventive medicine, as those areas are defined in Article II of the Constitution.

For planning, the constraints are both calendar-based: the degree has to be at least four calendar years old by the application deadline, and the documented experience has to be in place by that same deadline.

The application is rounded out by two references who can attest to the candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities in the ACVPM specialty and to unquestionable moral character and professional behavior, plus sponsorship by an ACVPM Diplomate in good standing.

The exam itself consists of Essay and Multiple-Choice sections given across two days, with five subject matter areas in each section.

Following approval by the Credentials Committee, a candidate must pass both sections within three years, a window that includes retake examinations and deferments; a candidate who has not passed all sections within the three-year period must resubmit an application for approval from the Credentials Committee.
